What Your Day Will Look Like:

Consor Engineers is seeking a detail-oriented Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician to join our Draper, Utah office.
In this role, you will support our Transportation and Water Infrastructure teams by collecting, analyzing, and mapping underground utility data for major UDOT and municipal projects throughout the region.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on high-profile public works and roadway projects, collaborating with engineers, surveyors, and utility coordinators to deliver accurate, safe, and efficient designs.

 

 

What You'll Do:

The SUE Technician assists in identifying, locating, and documenting existing underground utilities using a variety of field and office technologies. You’ll be responsible for gathering and processing field data, interpreting as-built records, coordinating with utility owners, and integrating findings into engineering and survey deliverables that support roadway and infrastructure design.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform utility investigations and field data collection for subsurface utility engineering projects.
  • Operate geophysical equipment (ground penetrating radar, pipe and cable locators) to determine horizontal and vertical positions of buried utilities.
  • Manage sub-contractors performing test holes and traffic control operations.
  • Review and interpret as-built drawings, utility maps, and records to support field verification efforts.
  • Collect survey-grade data using GPS or total station equipment for integration into base maps and design drawings.
  • Work closely with survey, design, and utility coordination teams to provide accurate data for conflict analysis and relocation design.
  • Process field data and prepare utility base maps, plan sheets, and exhibits using AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation.
  • Ensure compliance with UDOT and ASCE 38-22/75-22 subsurface utility engineering standards.
  • Support quality assurance, documentation, and project reporting tasks.
  • Maintain equipment and follow all safety procedures during field work.
  • Assist engineers and project managers with general utility coordination and documentation tasks.

What You'll Need:

 
  • 2–6 years of experience in subsurface utility engineering, utility locating, or related civil/survey fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with ASCE 38 quality levels and SUE data collection methods.
  • Experience operating utility locating and geophysical equipment (EM, GPR, etc.).
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and/or GIS software.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy.
  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, GIS, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively with office and design staff.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally for field assignments.
  • Knowledge of UDOT standards and experience with public infrastructure projects preferred.

 

• While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, hearing, and occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling. This job may occasionally require operating a company vehicle, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs.
